Guaranteed option to renew

When your life insurance renews annually, the last thing you want is to keep going through medical underwriting. With a guaranteed option to renew, your life insurance rolls over without you needing to provide new medical information.

What is a guaranteed option to renew?

International life insurance policies with William Russell include a guaranteed option to renew, which means your policy can renew automatically without you needing to submit new medical details.

Your life insurance policy will always roll over into the next year unless you tell us otherwise, until you reach the maximum age limit for your benefit.

  • As long as you continue paying your premiums, your cover will renew each year
  • Your policy will continue without you having to provide new medical details, even if your health changes during the policy year
If you’re starting a new life abroad, it’s important to have a plan B

How does it work?

With William Russell, your life insurance policy lasts for 12 months at a time and always includes a guaranteed option to renew.

At the end of your policy year:

  • We’ll let you know your policy is due for renewal about a month before it expires
  • You’ll receive an updated premium for the next year
  • At this point, you have the option to change your policy or cancel your renewal
  • Or, if we don’t hear from you, your existing policy will renew automatically and we’ll charge you your premium as usual

Will my premium change each year?

Your life insurance premiums are age‑based, so your premium may increase each year as you get older.

We’ll always let you know about any changes in advance of your renewal date. However, if you renew your policy continuously, we won’t charge you more as a result of any changes to your medical circumstances.

Better yet, if you stay with us continuously, you can continue to renew your policy with us until you reach 74 years old (so long as you started your policy before your 61st birthday – otherwise the maximum age is 69).

Bear in mind that if you leave William Russell, even temporarily, or fail to pay your premium, we won’t be able to offer you the benefits that come with continuity of membership. You may need to undergo a medical assessment when you rejoin us, which could impact your premiums.

What are the benefits of a guaranteed option to renew?

The biggest advantage of a guaranteed option to renew is the continuity of your insurance.

No need to worry about when and how to renew – your policy simply rolls over into the next year.

You won’t need to undergo a new medical assessment each year.

If you become sick or injured during your policy, this won’t impact you at renewal.

When your life insurance rolls over, you won’t need to undergo any medical assessments.

This is true even if you were ill or injured during your last year’s policy, and it means your next year’s insurance won’t be impacted by your change in medical circumstances.

What does guaranteed option to renew mean for you as an expat?

A guaranteed option to renew is a standard feature of your policy with William Russell, to help make renewing your cover as straightforward as possible.

When your policy is nearing its end, you’re not required to renew with the same provider. You’re free to compare other policies if you’re looking to reduce your premium, adjust your level of cover, or switch providers.

But if you are happy with William Russell, your guaranteed option to renew is a great feature to have. It offers ease and convenience, plus the total peace of mind that you’ll always be covered by your international life insurance.

As an expat, you’ll find the guaranteed option to renew especially beneficial if you are:

  • Always on the move: Expat life is fast-paced, so the last thing you want on your mind is shopping for a new policy.
  • Building a life abroad: your life insurance policy is important to help you protect your family, secure your mortgage and your business, so it’s good to know you’ll have the protection you need – even if you forget to renew.
  • Developing your career internationally: If your income or job situation changes over time, you can review your level of cover to keep it aligned with your needs.
  • Concerned about your health: The last thing you want is to end up paying more for life insurance after an illness or injury. A guaranteed option to renew ensures your premiums won’t be affected if you continue paying your premiums.
When you’re an expat living an on-the-go lifestyle, the last thing you want is to shop around for a new life insurance policy and fill in medical forms. We’ve built our policies with a guaranteed option to renew to make life easier for you.

Our guaranteed option to renew provides continuity and peace of mind by helping you maintain cover year after year, without needing to reapply or provide updated medical information.

Yes. One of the key advantages of annually renewable life insurance is that you can review your cover each year and adjust it to reflect your current needs, with a guaranteed option to renew each year subject to the policy terms.

For example, you might choose to:

  • Reduce your cover as you get older, become more financially secure, or pay off financial commitments like a mortgage
  • Increase your cover if your responsibilities grow, such as starting a family or taking on new financial commitments

This flexibility helps you avoid paying for cover you no longer need, while reducing the risk of being underinsured as your circumstances change.

No. You won’t need to submit new medical information each year when renewing under the guaranteed option to renew.

You must be 69 or younger when you take out your international life insurance policy.

You can renew your policy each year up to and including the policy year in which you turn 74 (or age 69 if your policy started after your 61st birthday).

Your cover will then end at the next renewal date after your 75th birthday (or after your 70th birthday if your policy started after your 61st birthday).

Yes. One of the key benefits of a guaranteed option to renew is that changes to your health during the policy term will not affect your ability to renew, provided you continue to meet the policy terms and age limits.

This means you will not need to complete new medical underwriting each year simply because your health circumstances have changed.

Yes. You can choose to cancel or not continue your policy at renewal.

Simply let us know by email before your renewal date, and we’ll confirm once we’ve received your instructions.

  • Death from negligence, illegal activity, or drug or alcohol abuse
  • Death not reported to us within 12 months
  • Death due to war or terrorism in a country the British FCDO advises its citizens not to travel to
  • Death while you’re in a restricted country where you have no cover
