The least friendliest cities in the world

Based on resident happiness, safety, LGBT+ inclusivity, top attractions and highest-rated hotels, the below cities rank as the least friendliest in the world:

The least friendliest cities in the world - 1/ Istanbul 2/ Buenos Aires 3/ Lisbon

1/ Istanbul, Turkey

Friendly City Score: 2.12

Istanbul, Turkey is the largest city in Turkey, and is the country’s economic and cultural hub. Unfortunately, Istanbul fell to the bottom of our friendliest cities.

This year, the metropolitan city of Istanbul ranked last in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) “Global Liveability Index 2022”. Our findings subsequently found that its residents were the unhappiest out of all our cities, with a happiness score of 5.44 out of 10.

Istanbul also took a low score of one for its LGBT+ inclusion, meaning the city is not ‘open for business’.

2/ Buenos Aires, Argentina

Friendly City Score: 2.50

Buenos Aires is the capital city of Argentina, and it scored second to last on our list of friendliest cities. The city had the lowest score in terms of safety, with a safety index score of 36.7 out of 100.

The levels of crime in Buenos Aires are high and it is important to be vigilant as a tourist. Another reason why Buenos Aires scored poorly is its LGBT+ inclusion, where the city scored a two, meaning it is only partially ‘open for business’.

3/ Lisbon, Portugal

Friendly City Score: 2.58

Lisbon, Portugal’s capital city, fell close to the bottom of our list of friendliest cities. Although the coastal city is a safe place for visitors, its residents had a poor score of overall happiness, with a score of 5.66 out of 10, just above Istanbul.

The city is partially open for business in terms of inclusivity but is not fully inclusive.

Methodology:

We started by taking a list of Wikipedia’s List of cities by international visitors, and removed any cities that did not have all of the following data available:

Safety Index Score
We took the safety index score from Numbeo’s Crime rate pages. This data is accurate as of 20/09/2022.

Happiness Score
We took a happiness score for each city from the World Happiness Report’s Cities and Happiness: A Global Ranking and Analysis. The rankings rely entirely on city dwellers’ self-reported quality of life, measured in terms of their subjective well-being. This data is accurate as of 20/09/2022.

LGBTQ Inclusion Score
We used Open for Business’ Open for Business City Rankings to find out which cities were open for business, partially open, or closed for business. This is related to many different factors, including eco-friendliness, transparent governance, quality of life, and inclusivity, meaning it is a welcoming place for the LGBT+ community. Using these ratings, we assigned a number to each with one indicating closed for business, two indicating partially open and three indicating open for business. This data is accurate as of 21/09/2022.
Miami is the only city that was scored a 0, this was added as the state has overturned a ban on conversion therapy, and it is one of only two cities in the US that has overturned the ban.

Top Attraction
To find the top attractions for each city, we used Yelp to search the city and selected the highest-rated attraction. We then took down the number of reviews and filtered the reviews to find the words ‘friendly’ and ‘welcoming’. This data is accurate as of 21/09/2022.

Number of 4* and up hotels
We used TripAdvisor for each city to find the total number of hotels rated four-stars and above. This data is accurate as of 21/09/2022.

Area (mi²)
We used Wikipedia for each city to find the total area (mi²). This data is accurate as of 21/09/2022.
