FAQs

  • How do I apply for international health insurance?

You can submit an application form by completing an application form from our Document Library. You can print and return your completed form to sales@william-russell.com, or you can fax it to +44 1276 486466.

On receipt of an application form, most customers can have cover in force within 24 hours subject to any underwriting. Once you have submitted your application, one of our insurance professionals will be in touch.

  • Do I need to have a medical?

No. However, you will need to answer some health questions on the application form. You must give full, complete and accurate answers to these questions, as we rely on the information you give us to process your application.

  • How can I pay my premiums?

If you pay your premium annually, you can pay by credit or debit card, bank transfer, or, if you are paying in GBP sterling from a UK bank account, you can pay by direct debit.

If you pay your premiums half-yearly, quarterly or monthly, you must pay by credit or debit card, or, if you are paying in GBP Sterling from a UK bank account, you can pay by direct debit.

If you choose to pay by direct debit we will need the completed direct debit mandate to be posted back to our head office so please be aware that this may delay your start date.

Our plans are available in US Dollars, Sterling and Euros.

  • Which credit and debit cards do you accept?

We accept VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, Switch, Visa Delta, and Maestro.

  • Is it more cost-effective to pay monthly or annually?

You can save around 5% on your premium for your international health insurance plan by paying annually.

  • Does my claims history affect my premium?

Your international health insurance plan will not cover a medical condition you have suffered from, or been treated for, before your plan commenced, unless you have disclosed full details of your condition, and we have agreed to cover it. Our underwriters may offer to cover a pre-existing condition once they have reviewed the completed application but you will always be informed if any terms apply to your plan.

Once your plan is in force, your personal claims and medical experience will not affect your renewal premiums.

  • What is the maximum age limit for applications?

You must be under age 70 when you apply for international health insurance, but once you have joined there is no age limit.

We can continue to renew your plan for as long as you require cover.

  • Do the international health plans have any country exclusions/restrictions?

Our health plans are available to you worldwide other than if you are resident in USA, Switzerland or the Netherlands, but your cover is restricted to the area of cover stated on your certificate of insurance. As standard, our plans do not provide cover in the USA although cover for temporary trips can be included if required. Check the plan agreements for full details.

  • What documents will I receive from William Russell when I take out a health plan?

As soon as you take out a policy, we will send you your plan documents.

If you agree to accept all your documents by email, we will donate $5 to our support charity, Oxfam.

  • Will I receive a membership card?

We can issue you with a plastic membership card. If you opt to receive your plan documents by email, however, we will send you a paper membership card which you can cut out and keep in your wallet or purse. We will then donate $5 to our supported charity, Oxfam.

  • Do you cover people who are based in their country of nationality?

Our health insurance plans are designed for expats and international citizens who either live, or spend a majority of their time overseas.

For instance, if you are a German based in Berlin, but you spend long periods of time travelling for work or pleasure outside of Germany, we will be able to offer cover.

If you are based overseas but your family remains at home, we will be able to offer cover to both you and your family.

For more information, please contact one of our insurance professionals. Send an email to sales@william-russell.com or call +44 1276 486477.

  • What happens if I need to move country?

Our health insurance plans are portable and can move with you worldwide other than if you become resident in USA, Switzerland or the Netherlands. So, if you need to change your country of residence at short notice, or if you need to return home temporarily, we can continue your cover. If you are moving to a country outside your area of cover you may need to switch your plan to a new area or product but cover should be able to continue. Your premium may change if you move into a different plan area.

  • Do you cover professional sportspeople?

We are unable to cover injury or illness arising from participation in any kind of professional sport. In addition, we do not offer cover for any injury or illness arising in participation from any form of racing (amateur or professional) that involves the use of a motorised vehicle.

  • How would I cancel my plan?

We think you’ll like being a customer of William Russell.

If you wish to cancel your plan with us, however, you can do so at any time by sending an email to enquiries@william-russell.com. Alternatively, you can write to us. If you have not made a claim, we will offer a pro rata refund on the remainder of your premium.
If you’re unhappy with anything at all in your first 30 days of cover, we’ll refund your premium provided you have not made a claim.

  • What is Medevac plus?

As standard, your plan covers emergency medical evacuation to the nearest suitable hospital. If you have both an Elite plan and Area One cover, with Medevac plus, you’ll have some additional benefits:

    • Opt to be evacuated to your home country
    • If you have no-one to accompany you on an evacuation, we will pay to fly a relative or friend out to you
    • We’ll evacuate you if you need emergency out-patient treatment such as advanced imaging or cancer treatment
