Cover for Newborns

We will pay the hospital accommodation charges and in-patient and day-patient treatment charges in respect of a child born to a mother who has been insured by the Elite Platinum or Gold plan for at least 12 months. Cover will be restricted to the first 28 days of life.

 

After that an application form must be completed and submitted to us in respect of the newborn child. During the first 28 days of life we will pay for any necessary in-patient and day-patient treatment relating to birth defects and congenital abnormalities. In the event of a multiple birth, the limit stated below is the maximum amount that can be claimed regardless of the number of children born.

The cost of routine newborn hospital and accommodation charges is usually included in the hospital’s estimate provided on the Maternity Notification of Admission form. Any costs for additional treatment that may be required must be pre-authorised by us, and the hospital will usually contact us to advise us of any additional charges.

 

If we are notified of a request for an extended guarantee of payment letter, we will require a medical report and cost estimate in respect of the additional expenses of the newborn baby. Upon receipt of this information, we will liaise with the treatment providers to arrange for the authorised costs to be settled directly.

 

Costs We Don’t Cover

  • There is no cover under the Newborn benefit in respect of costs relating to out-patient treatment.
  • There is no cover for costs relating to nappies, birth certificates and any non-medical costs.
  • We do not pay for elective circumcision.
  • There is no cover in respect of treatment of any newborn child (within the first 28 days of life), born following assisted reproduction treatment (e.g., IVF), in the event of any multiple birth and/or in the event of any birth occurring within 36 weeks of conception.
  • There is no cover under the newborn benefit if you act as a surrogate or have anyone else acting as a surrogate for you.
  • There is no cover under the Newborn benefit in respect of any treatment received after the first 28 days of life.

Adding your new baby to your policy

There is no automatic cover for newborn children. (However there is up to a maximum of 28 days cover for a child born to a mother who has been insured by the Platinum plan of Gold plan for a minimum period of 12 months).

You must complete a new application form and neonatal questionnaire in respect of your new baby, and submit these to us along with your baby’s discharge summary. We may accept this new application with or without special terms, or we may refuse to accept this application at our sole and complete discretion and without being required to give any reason for our decision.

There is no cover under the plan in respect of any treatment relating to congenital and/or hereditary conditions, except under the Newborn benefit during the first 28 days of life.
